Definitions of Direct Care Classifications
Advocates: Advocates are responsible for implementing Beta’s mission statement through directly supporting one or more individuals in most aspects of their lives. This includes, but is not limited to, making choices, developing relationships, assisting in financial and medication management, medical appointments and transportation arrangement, keeping files/records up to date and current, attending monthly total staff meetings and being part of the team.
Assistants: Assistants are responsible for implementing Beta’s mission statement through directly supporting one or more individuals in most aspects of their lives. This includes but is not limited to, making choices, developing competencies, increasing community presence and involvement, developing relationships, assisting in financial and medication management, medical appointments and transportation arrangements.
Overnight Awake Staff: An employee who remains awake through the night to provide support to individuals who have disabilities is an overnight awake staff. Employees must document that they were awake in the communication log.
Overnight Asleep Staff: An employee who may sleep during their scheduled hours but is expected to assist individuals as needed and to respond to emergencies.
Roommates: Roommates have private rooms and shared use of all common areas in return for sleeping 5 overnights a week. They are paid for hours assisting individuals to get ready for work each workday.
Per Diem: Direct service staff who are hired to work on an as needed basis assisting individuals with direct care in most aspects of their daily lives. Hours are scheduled through the scheduling department or an administrator on-call and may vary each week.
Personal Care Attendant (PCA): A personal care attendant (PCA) is a person who is recruited and hired directly by an individual with a disability, or their surrogates, to assist them with direct care in specific aspects of their daily lives and includes personal care as well as household services such as laundry, shopping, housekeeping, meal preparation, transportation to medical providers, and other needs. PCAs are not employees of Beta but work as Beta’s surrogates and are welcome to apply to positions at Beta.
